Jean-Dominique Bauby's background


Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor of Elle magazine, until 1995 when he suffered a stroke and was completely paralysed except for being able to move one eyelid. Through this small movement he was able to communicate, and went on to write The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, published shortly before his death in 1997.


He dictated the entire book letter by letter, blinking to select each one as an assistant recited the alphabet repeatedly, a process that took an estimated 200,000 blinks and around ten months to produce roughly 130 pages.
