Ronnie O'Sullivan's background
Ronnie O'Sullivan is the GOAT of Snooker, and he underlined that point on 17 March 2026 when he made a break of 153 - you have to bear in mind that the usual highest break available is 147, although there is a theoretical highest possible break of 155. These extra high scores are possible when the opponent makes a foul shot, leaving the player a free shot on any ball that then counts as 1 (as if it were a red), together with whatever colour they may then go on to pot, and these points will then be added to whatever the conventional break scores.
As you should gather, this is an exceptional occurrence, and as with all exceptional occurrences we ought to be able to see some exceptional astrological features. In this, Ronnie does not disappoint.
What makes Ronnie O'Sullivan such a great example?

The 153 came in the first frame of his World Open quarter-final against Ryan Day, built on a free ball after Day's opening safety went astray, and surpassed the previous unofficial record break of 148 held by Jamie Burnett since 2004. O'Sullivan came within a whisker of the theoretical maximum of 155, missing out only when he opted for a safer pink over a tricky final black.
