Muhammad Ali's background
Muhammad Ali , born Cassius Clay, was a three-time World Heavyweight boxing champion widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century, as famous for his brashly confident self-promotion as for his fighting. In 1967 he refused induction into the US military on religious and political grounds during the Vietnam War, was stripped of his titles and banned from boxing for over three years at the height of his career, before the conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1971.
What makes Muhammad Ali such a great example?
Muhammad Ali makes a good example of a chart that has to hold both extraordinary self-belief and a costly principled stand: he gave up more than three years at his physical peak rather than compromise his beliefs, and still came back to reclaim the title he had been stripped of.
The chart shown is the birth of Muhammad Ali, set at midday, with the time his career ended as transits, set at 6:31am.
