The year is 1976, the sport is Formula 1, and the great rivalry of a pretty amazing year of racing is that between Niki Lauda and James Hunt . Partway through the year Niki Lauda suffered a horrific crash and fire at the Nurburgring, where just beforehand he had led a protest that it was too dangerous to race. The crash left him seriously burnt and scarred for life. Yet he made a dramatic return to racing for Ferrari, at the Italian Grand Prix.


The year's racing was full of many dramatic incidents, not least the finale in Japan, where a torrential downpour saw James Hunt win just enough points to take the title for the first and only time in his career.


Niki Lauda was a clinical driver, World Champion, James Hunt was neither. He was just about as different from Lauda as was possible, while still being a talented driver. 1976 was a trial by combat between their styles as human beings as much as racing drivers. The chosen weapons, Formula 1 cars, Ferrari for Lauda, McLaren for Hunt. James had also only got his drive with McLaren at the last minute, and because reigning champion Emerson Fittipaldi had walked out to join his brother's team, leaving McLaren scrambling for a replacement driver just before the season began.


Although fierce rivals on the track, Hunt and Lauda had in fact been close friends for years beforehand, having shared a flat together during their junior racing days, and Lauda later said of Hunt's title win: 'If anybody should get the championship, then I'm happy it was James. We were not buddies, but we were at least sympatico. We took care of each other in a nice way, which in those days was rare in Formula One.'

Niki Lauda 's crash at the Nurburgring in Germany resulted in severe disfiguring burns. Before the race, Lauda had led a protest by drivers that the circuit and conditions were too dangerous to race. The race started at 2:05pm, and the crash occurred about 3 minutes into the second 7 minute lap, so 2:15pm.

19761024 James Hunt wins 1976 Formula1 Championship

James Hunt 's victory in the F1 Championship of 1976 was not decided until the final race at Fuji Speedway in Japan, in the pouring rain. It should have started at something like 5am UK time, but there was a delay of about two hours because of the rain. The race, along with several other key moments from the 1976 season, would be immortalised in the film Rush (2013 film) .


Lauda retired early on in the race, unable to blink because of facial burns from his accident in Germany. After leading most of the race Hunt suffered a puncture, then had a delayed pitstop and finally received mixed pit signals from his team. But he managed to finish in third place, scoring four points, enough for him to win the World Championship by one point. - Wikipedia
