England's background


England was the dream of Alfred the Great , but it was not until his grandson Æthelstan , King of the Anglo-Saxons, conquered the last remaining Viking kingdom of York in 927, that there was the first ruler of a whole country of England. It seems that the date that became England's birth was when at Eamont, near Penrith, on 12 July 927, King Constantine II of Alba, King Hywel Dda of Deheubarth, Ealdred of Bamburgh, and King Owain of Strathclyde (or Morgan ap Owain of Gwent) accepted Æthelstan's overlordship. This is the date that I have used, and as far as I can tell it seems to work well astrologically.


England was conquered when William the Bastard, Duke of Normandy, won the Battle of Hastings in 1066, becoming King William I aka William the Conqueror , and the transits at that time can be read as the effect of subjugation on the English people. Echoes repeatedly come back to haunt us, as can be seen with events from the murder of Wat Tyler to suppress the Peasants' Revolt, through to the Leave Vote that brought about Brexit and yet another theft of liberty from the English people [and I say English advisedly, as Brexit was largely their fault, though instigated by the descendants of the aristocracy, and probably egged on by foreign powers].


Many of the early and middle contests that involved the country and its people were of a martial nature, with many battles under all kinds of circumstances, with varied political outcomes. Later, as we became more civilized, less battles took place and the contest archetype was gradually diverted into sporting contests, often involving the same fundamentals seen in the earlier battles.


In selecting dates and events I have tried to be as omnivorous with success as possible, although it has to be said there were far too many fixtures throughout a thousand years of history to include everything. Also, as the British Empire became established, the corresponding events became those of a broader country.


Some are bound to dispute my assessment of History, and Astrology, but what happened happened, so use your own judgment and you shouldn't go too far wrong.


What makes England such a great example?


England - The Birth of a Nation

England has had a long and colourful history, and we can be glad for many of the good things that we introduced to the world [and less pleased about many bad things]. Although we cannot claim to have invented sport, nor slavery, nor democracy, nor science, we did advance many of these things, for good or ill. What we can rightly claim is the beautiful game; Association Football was our gift to the World, and along with it the concept of fair play, which perhaps is one reason we get so upset by some talented individuals blatantly going against the spirit of the game in an attempt to win at all costs. For me there is equal corruption of youth in misappropriations of concepts such as infinity, and the bad example that getting away with cheating gives to our children. If you play football the way Donald Trump plays golf, then it matters not how much St. Gary Lineker approves of your skills, you are hand in hand with the Devil.

Of course, all the planets are important, and accuracy so far back in time may be open to question, but these aspects shown give a clear, if simple, picture of a people; a people who see two sides to everything, who have a sense of justice in action; and a people who have an intense and idealistic desire. The trine between Venus-Neptune and Mars-Jupiter also suggests an intense desire to win, but also to play fairly and with beauty, not to mention compassion for the underdog.


Of course, not everyone lives up to this ideal, and so it may not always be apparent, but these astrological features seem to me to fit everything that I was brought up to believe about my homeland. From Robin Hood to the RSPCA, from the battlefields of England, Europe and Empire to the stadia of the World, we love a beautiful game.


Hidden, almost, between Sun and Venus, not quite conjunct yet close enough to be involved, stands Mercury; always a question mark, Mercury asks what, who, and how, but also will we win, and we will see among the events that Mercury frequently is highlit, emphasising the anxiety that accompanies competition.

England may have been formed from Alfred's dream, over a century beforehand, but of the many historical victories and defeats, none stands out so much as the arrival of William the Conqueror in 1066 [not even winning the World Cup in 1966], with the defeat of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings , and the subjugation of the Anglo-Saxons to Norman rule for the [nearly] thousand years since. It changed everything, not least our language, and it coloured in much of the detail of who we were to become. As an astrological event, the transits ought to be seen as a commentary on the effect upon the people.

Magna Carta 1215 (mercury) (conjunct) (mercury)


Magna Carta , while an agreement between aristocrats, turned out to be a landmark in the establishment of legal rights, the principles that have now morphed into human rights, and we should always bear in mind how quickly and easily such hard won rights can be lost if we are not vigilent.


The headline may be Magna Carta, but the meaning was the nadir of King John, the villain of the piece, along with the Sherriff of Nottingham, in the legend of Robin Hood. As such Magna Carta is so much more than the aristocrats getting the upper hand over the monarchy. It represents a deep question within the English psyche about who we are, and that includes where we stand on the social policy of Robin Hood, which equates to fairplay. This Mercury return surfaces time and again and so is important.

Henry VIII broke from Rome and established the Church of England, so that he could marry Ann Boleyn, but conveniently also enabled the Crown to take vast amounts of the wealth of the Church. The schism was to cause major distress for the English people for years to come, and that is reflected in the stress shown in the astrology.

The Spanish Armada was an invasion fleet sent by Philip II, King of Spain, with the intention of capturing England so that Catholic rule could be restored. However, it was defeated by a combination of proto-British Standards [the English had standard sized canons and balls, so could fire quicker], nimble English seamanship, and the weather. Francis Drake famously played bowls on Plymouth Hoe, while awaiting the Spanish, and then sailed out to defeat them.

The Hand of a Cheat 1986


Diego Maradona may have been held in high esteem by footballers such as Gary Lineker, who appreciate the skill with which he could play football, but pushing the ball into the net because you are too short to get you head to it is plain cheating, and no amount of calling it the Hand of God can gloss over that fact. It is playing football according to Trump rules, and illustrates every corrupt and wicked deed that prevents life from being beautiful. Too many people think that winning at all costs is OK, but that brings sport down to the level of war, and makes it ugly, and pointless.


Astrologically, we can see the difficulty for England, a total absence of any helping hand.


What is interesting is that the Uranus Chiron opposition makes suitable aspects to the 12 o'clock Ascendant of 927, possibly reinorcing the idea of a Libra rising sign for the English, which would then fit with the 1801 chart for the British as a whole.
