Ed Smith's background
Ed Smith was an English cricketer who played for Kent and then Middlesex, captaining the latter to the 2008 Twenty20 Cup title, before a broken ankle forced him into premature retirement in 2008 at just 31. He went on to become a writer, broadcaster and, from 2018 to 2021, England's national cricket selector.
What makes Ed Smith such a great example?
Ed Smith makes a good example of a career cut short at its peak by a single physical injury rather than by decline, retiring the same year his team won a major trophy, which is a good test of whether a chart can distinguish an abrupt, externally imposed ending from a natural, gradual one.
The chart shown is the birth of Ed Smith, set at midday, with the time his career ended as transits, set at 6:31am.
