What makes T.E. Lawrence such a great example?

T.E. Lawrence's background

T.E. Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia was an orientalist, a writer, a soldier, and one of the most famous heroes of WWI, and was the subject of David Lean's film Lawrence of Arabia starring Peter O'Toole.

With the outbreak of WWI, Lawrence, being an expert on the Middle East, was sent to Cairo from where he then went on to disrupt the activities of the Ottoman Empire, helping foment the rebellion of the Arabs against the Turks, and helping to establish the House of Saud, and Saudi Arabia.

After the war he served in the RAF and the Tank Corps, wrote The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and famously rode motorcycles, including his Brough Superior, on which he had the accident at Cloud's Hill, where he lived, and that proved fatal.

19141215 T.E. Lawrence Arrives in Cairo to Join the Arab Bureau

In December 1914 Lawrence was sent to Cairo to join the Arab Intelligence Bureau, and we can see in the transits that Jupiter especially was marked out to be key in subsequent events.

Nearly a year after his capture and assault there, Lawrence returned to Dera'a with Arab forces as the town fell during the final Allied advance into Syria, a personally significant reversal of his earlier ordeal at the same place.

19190517 T.E. Lawrence Crashes in a Handley Page Aircraft

Flying towards Egypt to retrieve notes for what would become Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Lawrence was aboard a Handley Page bomber that crashed attempting to land at Rome, killing both pilots; Lawrence survived with a broken shoulder blade and two broken ribs.

By this point serving in the ranks under an assumed name, Lawrence, an enthusiastic and often reckless motorcyclist, crashed on the way home from London, one of several such accidents through his life on the powerful Brough Superior machines he favoured.

19350513 T.E. Lawrence Crashes his Motorcycle at Cloud's Hill

On 13 May 1935, close to his cottage at Cloud's Hill, Lawrence swerved his Brough Superior to avoid two boys on bicycles and was thrown over the handlebars, suffering severe head injuries from which he never regained consciousness.

19350519 The Death of T.E. Lawrence

Lawrence never regained consciousness after the crash and died six days later, on 19 May 1935, at the age of 46. One of the doctors who treated his head injuries, Hugh Cairns, was prompted by his death to begin research into motorcycle helmets that would eventually lead to their widespread use.
