Charles Dunning's background

(wikitree) Charles Dunning , my great-great-grandfather, was a military man, a shoeing smith in the Royal Horse Artillery. He wasn't the only one; my dad, Tony, did his National Service in the RHA, in Gaza just after WWII; my grandfather, James, an artificer and later Sergeant, but with the RGA at Ypres and on the Somme during WWI, and then in India and China between the wars; my great-grandfather, George was Master Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery; and on my mum's side, my adoptive grandfather, Herbert, had been a Captain in the Tank Corps during WWI, when he was awarded the MC, and his father, also Herbert, an honorary Lieutenant Colonal and OBE attached to the Royal Engineers throughout a career in which he served in the Boer War and WWI; and then there was my mum's other adoptive grandfather - in whose house I was born - Engineer Captain Charles Huddy, who spent his career in the Royal Navy.

Many of us have ancestors who were in the military in one capacity or another, and it used to be a fairly common refrain to hear 'Grandad, what did you do in the War?' Because after WWI and WWII everybody's lives were touched in one way or another. But now that it is heading off towards ancient history, how can we know even a little of what they had to live through? Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway, my answer is that Astrology provides some insight, and we can see this by looking at the life of Charles Dunning.

Charles spent many years alternating between India and Woolwich, along with his wife and children, many of whom were born in India. In 1882 his wife Cecilia received his campaign medal for the Second Anglo-Afghan War , on his behalf at Woolwich; it is not known why he was not presented it himself. During that campaign the artillery were attached to all three invading Field Forces - designated Peshawar Valley, Kurram Valley and Kandahar respectively, and I cannot yet find any reason why he should have been in any Field Force, given he seems to have belonged to C Battery of the 1st Regiment RHA. So, in the absence of proper evidence, I believe it potentially interesting to look to see if any dates, for any of the significant events, look like they may have been relevant for him.

What makes Charles Dunning any kind of an example?

Birth of Charles Dunning

As stated, the combination of a lack of firm evidence for which Field Force he served with, and no exact birth data beyond what genealogical records provide, means this remains speculative rather than a properly worked example, for now.
