Marie Bonaparte , a great-grandniece of Napoleon I and by marriage Princess George of Greece and Denmark, was a French author and psychoanalyst closely linked to Sigmund Freud. Immensely wealthy, she used her fortune and connections to fund the spread of psychoanalysis in France and, crucially, to secure Freud's escape from Vienna to London after the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938, also ransoming and preserving his letters and early manuscripts. She wrote extensively on female sexuality, a subject shaped by her own long analysis with Freud.

Marie Bonaparte makes an interesting example of wealth and status placed directly in the service of an idea: her devotion to psychoanalysis, and specifically to Freud's own safety and legacy, went well beyond ordinary patronage.
