Guillaume Le Gentil's background

Guillaume Le Gentil was a French astronomer, inspired by his teacher Joseph-Nicolas Delisle , who set out in 1760 on an expedition to Pondicherry in India to observe and time the rare 1761 transit of Venus, a measurement then needed to calculate the distance from the Earth to the Sun. War, misfortune and cloud conspired against him at every turn: he missed the 1761 transit while still at sea, waited eight years stranded abroad for the 1769 repeat only to be clouded out at the crucial moment, and returned to France in 1771 to find he had been declared legally dead, his wife remarried, his possessions dispersed and his seat at the Academy of Sciences given away. He eventually recovered his position, remarried, and wrote a celebrated account of his ordeal.
