Lee Miller was an American model who had already appeared on the cover of Vogue before moving to Paris in 1929, where she talked her way into becoming the student, model and lover of the Surrealist artist Man Ray . Their three years together were intensely creative on both sides: Miller is credited with co-discovering the solarisation technique that became one of Man Ray's signature effects, and she went on to become a celebrated photographer and war correspondent in her own right, photographing the liberation of Dachau and Buchenwald.

Man Ray was an American Surrealist and Dada artist working mainly in Paris, best known for his innovative photography, including the rayograph technique named after him, as well as for his paintings and films.

Lee Miller and Man Ray had an intense and often turbulent relationship from 1929 to 1932, during which each pushed the other's work in new directions; their devastating breakup inspired some of Man Ray's most famous later images, built around fragments of Miller's eyes and lips. Despite the pain of the split, the two reconciled as friends in 1937 and remained close for the rest of their lives.
