Frank Sinatra was one of the defining American singers and entertainers of the 20th century, and the central figure of the Rat Pack, the informal group of Las Vegas entertainers built around him.

Sammy Davis Jr was a singer, dancer and actor, and along with Sinatra and Dean Martin one of the core members of the Rat Pack. The two first met in 1941, when Sammy was a 15-year-old dancer and Frank a 25-year-old band singer on the same bill, and their friendship, though tested by a bitter falling-out in 1959 and later strained by Davis's drug use, lasted close to fifty years. Sinatra was best man at Davis's wedding in 1960, and Davis, who was Black, credited Sinatra with using his own standing to insist on equal treatment for him in segregated Las Vegas venues.

Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr were, for the best part of five decades, as close as brothers, on stage and off, through very public disputes and equally public reconciliations.
