Egon Schiele and Gerti Schiele's background

Egon Schiele was an early 20th Century Austrian artist whose brief life was cut short by the influenza epidemic at the end of WWI. He is notable not only for his art, but also for the intense relationships he had with his sister Gerti, his girlfriend Wally, and his wife Edith.

Gerti Schiele was Egon's younger sister, and one of his earliest and most frequent models; their closeness, including some of his more provocative drawings of her, has long been a subject of speculation among biographers.

Wally Neuzil became Egon's model, muse and companion from 1911, appearing in some of his best-known paintings, before he ended the relationship in 1915 to marry Edith. She died of scarlet fever in 1917 while serving as a war nurse, aged only 23.

Edith Harms lived across the street from Egon's studio in Vienna, and married him in June 1915, just days before he was called up for military service. She was six months pregnant when she died of Spanish flu in October 1918, three days before Egon himself succumbed to the same epidemic.
