Princess Diana's background
Princess Diana was the first wife of Prince Charles [now King Charles III], and mother of Princes William and Harry. Her openness about her own struggles, her divorce from Charles in 1996, and her prominent humanitarian work, particularly her campaign against landmines and her efforts to de-stigmatise HIV/AIDS, made her one of the most photographed and discussed women in the world. She died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, at the age of 36.
What makes Princess Diana such a great example?
Princess Diana is a good example of the gap that can open up between a very public role and a very private life: the 'People's Princess' image sat alongside a marriage that was unhappy from early on, and her death while still young, at the height of her public profile, makes for an unusually clean-edged chart to test against.
Prince William's background
Prince William is the elder son of Diana and King Charles III, and heir apparent to the British throne since his father's accession in 2022. He was fifteen when his mother died, and has since spoken publicly, alongside his brother Harry, about the long-term effect of her death and of growing up in the public eye. He is married to Catherine, Princess of Wales, with whom he has three children.
What makes Prince William such a great example?
Prince William offers a useful comparison chart to his mother's: someone who lost a parent very publicly and very young, while himself being groomed from birth for one of the most scrutinised roles in the world. It is a good test of whether a chart can show both the private grief and the long, steady preparation for public duty running alongside it.
