(wikitree) James Byrd Jr. was a 49 year old Black man from Jasper, Texas, born 2 May 1949. On 7 June 1998, three white men - John William King, Lawrence Russell Brewer and Shawn Allen Berry - offered him a ride home, then beat him, chained him by the ankles to the back of their pickup truck, and dragged him for around three miles along a country road. Byrd was alive for much of the journey before his body was torn apart when it struck a culvert; his killers then dumped what remained of his body outside a Black cemetery and went on to a barbecue.


Murder of James Byrd Jr. became one of the most notorious hate crimes in modern American history. Lawrence Russell Brewer, an avowed white supremacist and the instigator of the attack, was executed in 2011. John William King, who had recruited Brewer and Berry into a prison gang and had a swastika and other racist tattoos, was executed in 2019. Shawn Allen Berry, who had no such affiliations but took part in the attack and drove the truck, was sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2001 the state of Texas passed the James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act, and in 2009 the federal Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was signed into law.
